Will I be FDIC insured if I deposit $100,000 in multiple banks? Is it true that you are only insured up to $100,000 per social security number?

The FDIC, and NCUA for credit unions, insurance limits are per depositor at each separately chartered financial institution. If you have accounts at three separate banks as an individual, you can have up to $300,000 in insured balances, or $100,000 at each bank.
There are also separate limits for owners of joint accounts and owners who have certain types of accounts in trust for others. You can get more information at an insured institution, or at the FDIC's website, where you'll find lots of information on insured deposits.
