Joint Account: What Does This Mean?

My great uncle and my father have an account together and the checks read "the uncle's name AND my father's name" Doesn't that mean the money is 50/50; or does this mean the uncle is the sole owner? I know there are differences in meaning whether you put "AND" or "OR" in between.

What matters is the deposit contract that your father and great uncle signed with the bank, not what's printed on their checks. In most, but not all joint accounts, the entire account belongs to each joint owner. That is, either owner could withdraw all the funds and close the account, regardless of any private agreement they might have between them.
