I'm asking this question for a friend of mine who lives in Romania. Her great-grandmother moved to the USA when she was little and worked hard to save up money. When she passed away, she left thousands of dollars to my friend's mother, who is still in Romania. The great-grandmother said she made her the beneficiary, but before she died she never wrote where the money was. My friend does not speak English and wants me to help her track the money down and find out if there truly is an account with her great-grandmother's name on it and if the money is there. How do I go about finding this money and what information and documentation do I need?
Assuming there is a Will involved, it probably has the name of the attorney or law firm on it that helped this lady write the Will. The law firm may know where the accounts are.
If there is no Will and no other lead, conversations with some of the banks in the area where the lady lived or worked might prove helpful. You could also check the state's abandoned property office to see if funds are held there.
