Recordkeeping for Closed Accounts

How long are banks required to keep records of closed accounts?

Untitled

State laws dictate record retention requirements. Electronic records are easier to keep because they take less space so even if a requirement extends only to three years, your bank may have records for longer periods, and while e-records are easier to find that doesn't always make them easy or fast. Contact your bank and ask what the requirement is, if they exceed that (if necessary) and what the research cost is. You may also be able to contact a state banking agency to inquire if you want separate verification.
