My grandmother started a savings account for me in 1985. The bank is no longer around. What happened to the account?

It's possible that your grandmother closed the account out. The more likely possibility is that the bank surrendered the accounts to the state under the state's abandoned property laws. An excellent place to start looking for that money is at www.missingmoney.com, a website operated by an association of state abandoned property officials.
To find out what became of the bank that held the account, go here and click on the link to Bank Find. If you provide the name of the old bank, the Bank Find site will help you identify whether it was taken over by another bank or simply went out of business.
