Tax Preparer Sends Refund to Limbo

I got my tax refund, and had it directly deposited to my fiance's account, through a pre-paid card, but the tax preparer put the wrong account number on the account and no one can even tell me where to locate the check to have them correct the problem. What should I do?

First, it's a bad idea to direct deposit a refund or any other payment to an account that's not yours to control. You and your fiancé may be on the best of terms, but your fiance's bank could detect the name discrepancy on a direct deposit and refuse it, sending it back to the IRS through the Treasury Department. The IRS would take some time, but would issue you a paper check.

If you have not already done so, contact the IRS about the missing refund. Be prepared to provide your Social Security number, your tax filing status (single, for example) and the amount of the expected refund. The IRS should be able to track down where the payment went, and may be able to recover it for you. Make that call right away, to minimize the chance that someone isn't spending what appears to be a windfall that landed in his or her account.
