Wants to Remove Name from Joint Account

My name and address are on my ex-husband's checking account. Our relationship is over and he no longer resides at my address. I no longer have the ATM card. I have asked him to remove my name and do a change of address for the bank statement. I could have refused the statement, but will not until my name is off this account. The account is his and he opened it. Am I liable in any way because my name is on this account? How can I remove my name and change the address?

There is no communication with my ex-husband nor will there be. Let's say it wasn't a healthy relationship.

If you are a joint owner of the account, you remain liable for any overdraft or other problems that might come up. If you are not a joint owner, but simply an authorized signer, you aren't liable, but it would be wise to send your ex-husband and the bank a certified letter announcing that you will no longer serve as an authorized signer.

If you are an account owner, and can't get your ex-husband to close the account and open a new one without you, you can force the issue by closing the account yourself. When you do so, have the bank issue a cashier's check, which you can ask them to make payable to your ex-husband, and then send the check and a notice that the account is closed to him.

To be fair to him, it would be a good idea to notify him of your intention to close the account if he does not do so himself. If you take action unilaterally, you could cause checks he has written to bounce. As much as that idea might be appealing, it might backfire, causing you unwanted aggravation.
