Bank Puts Money in Wrong Account: What Now?

If a bank deposits money into the wrong bank account, what actions are taken? Isn't it the bank's mistake for depositing it elsewhere?

Untitled

Generally, it is the bank's mistake, unless it was given incorrect instructions. When the party to whom the funds belong makes a claim on the bank, the bank will research its records. When it identifies the error, the bank normally corrects it, by removing the funds from the account where they were placed in error and crediting the proper account.

From the perspective of the party that received the temporary unauthorized credit, there is a responsibility to notify the bank. There's no such thing as "Finders, keepers" when it comes to such an error.
