I have an elderly friend who has just discovered that a lending institution where she had two accounts, closed many years ago. Has she lost her money?

Perhaps not. You can help your friend by using the FDIC's "Bank Find" tool. Using that web page, you can enter the name and location of the old institution, and have a good chance of learning whether it was taken over by another institution. In some cases, you can follow a series of mergers and acquisitions to determine what has become of an old, closed institution.
If your friend didn't actually close out those accounts many years ago, the funds may have been surrendered to the state under Abandoned Property laws. You may be able to help search for those accounts using the website sponsored collectively by the state administrators of abandoned property.
