Direct Deposit to Closed Account: What Now?

I was told that my account was closed and I have a direct deposit pending in the account that the bank closed. How do I get my money?

Contact the bank and explain that you have the direct deposit set up. Ask them if they will provide you with a cashier's check for the direct deposit on the day it is supposed to be available to you. Get assurance from the bank that they won't just return it "account closed".

If you don't get a good sense that the bank can do that, contact the sender of the direct deposit and try to put the brakes on it as soon as possible. If it's already been sent, put the sender on notice that it might be returned because of the closed account, and ask that it be provided to you by check if it is returned. Then, make other arrangements with the sender to receive your check.
