I put my mother on my bank account in the United States years ago when I moved to another country as an expatriot. I have been back in the US for years, and forgot that her name was still on my bank accounts, and I want to remove her name. How do I do this? She is quite elderly now and cannot walk very well. Does she need to go into the bank to sign some forms to get her name off my accounts? The IRS has my tax ID number for these bank accounts. As it turned out, my mother never had to do any bank transactions for me while I lived abroad.
In most cases a bank will not remove a person from an account. Instead, they require that the account be closed and a new account opened, which would be solely under your ownership.
Call your bank and ask if this is their policy. If it is not, you may be able to simply show your ID and have her removed.
