Are Account Numbers Reused by Banks?

Do banks routinely reuse account numbers? I have a couple of old (1988) savings account passbooks that I just found. When I called the bank (which has been bought out a couple of times) I was told that yes, they have an account with that number, but it doesn't have my name on it. How do I check to make sure that it really isn't my account for which someone was able to get the number and take ownership?

Banks can re-use account numbers and especially if there has been one or more mergers, they may have had to make changes. You can provide your information to your bank and ask them to check their signature card. They can determine with just a little research if you were on that account.

We have to assume that you never closed your account or you wouldn't think this might be yours. If it isn't, your next question will be what happened to your account? If it isn't still at the bank, it may have been turned over to the state, as per their escheat laws. In that case, start by looking here.
