My bank account was closed on 5/12/10. It was deliquent. My income tax refund check went there in 6/26/10, and they kept it. Can they keep my income tax check on a closed account?
If there was money owed them, the closure of the account was a bookkeeping entry. The account was considered reopened when the deposit was received. The money you owed was still owed and the deposit satisfied that in part or in whole. This is not an uncommon practice.
Unless you challenge that you owed them the money, what is your complaint? If it is that they didn't allow the debt to continue while giving you other funds that you chose not to repay them with, what would you have done? If someone owed you $100 and came to your door asking if he could mow your lawn for money, would you pay them for the service, or talk about some or all of this going toward the debt owed to you?
