Ambulance Service Takes Bank Information: What?

Is it legal for someone to capture my banking information? The local ambulance service took our account and routing numbers from our check, wrote them on a form, and sent it through the regular mail in an attempt to force us to authorize auto-payments every month. Is this legal? I have had a credit card stolen and it took two years of fighting with American Express, even after the Secret Service broke up the ring, and I do not want to go through that again. Who do I need to contact if this is illegal? What recourse do I have?

For the ambulance service to get this information they would have had to request it from you. They are free to do so. While its certain that they did this to try to collect on the bill, their ability to do it when services are being rendered is questionable. While this request is not illegal, it certainly sounds like giving them this data may be a requirement to get the urgent health care services they would offer. Perhaps the question is best asked of whomever licenses the service. This may be your city or county government.

Certainly they are free to request it from a banking perspective. All that is really prohibited is their debiting your account without authorization.
