If I cannot get a bank account can I get an account at a credit union?
Unlike banks, credit unions have membership requirements. Although they are typically getting broader as credit unions compete with one another and with banks for business, the membership requirements may limit members to residents of a particular geographic area, employees of certain companies or certain industries, etc.
If you meet a credit union's membership criteria, you will still need to satisfy any policy the credit union has with regard to past banking relationships or creditworthiness (if the credit union has such a policy). Since each bank or credit union has its own criteria for accepting deposit accounts, you'll have to do some research to find out if you can open an account with an institution near you.
