Fees after Account Closed?

Can a bank legally charge fees after you have already closed your account with them?

Untitled

A lot depends on whether you formally closed the account with a visit to the bank, or simply wrote a check for the balance. Did the bank know, for example, that you were closing the account?

What were the terms of the bank's deposit contract. Whether or not fees are legally permissible will depend to some degree on whether the contract permits them.

Contact the bank and ask about the fees. Tell the bank that you thought the account was closed, and were surprised by the fees. Then ask for a refund to allow the account to close properly. A reasonable bank will probably not want to quibble over post-closing fees.
