Retrieving Money from a Joint Account

I recently left my abusive husband with whom I have a joint account. He will not let me have anything (driver's license, money, etc.). Can I get money out of the account?

If your account is joint, the bank should have a way to compare your signature with the one you used to open the account. That should be enough for the bank to allow you to draw from the account (or close it out, if you wish).

Are you known at your bank? Is there someone there who can confirm your identity without resorting to verification through a driver's license? Having someone at the bank branch who knows who you are, is good insurance against the possibility that the bank routinely asks customers -- particularly those who aren't regulars at the bank -- for ID.
