My old employer accidentally deposited money into my account and requested that I return it. What legal power do they have to recover the funds from my account? I am a trustworthy person, but I feel that they owe me funds for additional hours that I worked.

Since your email comes to us from the United Kingdom and not from the U.S., your employer's ability to recover the funds without your assent would be very limited once the funds had been in your account for a few days (there are provisions here for reversing erroneous credits shortly after they are posted). However, this may not be the case with the laws or rules affecting such matters in the UK.
