Retrieving Funds from Old Account at Closed Bank

My aunt opened a savings account for my sister and me in 1978. We forgot about it until we recently found the bank book. The bank no longer exists. Is there any way that we can still get the money from account?

At this late date, the most logical approach is to see if the account was surrendered to the state as abandoned property. Research http://www.unclaimed.org, which is a site maintained by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA). Each state has laws on the types of property that have to be surrendered and at what point bank accounts are considered abandoned. You'll want to focus on the states in which the bank was located and, if different, in which you and your aunt lived.
