Opening a U.S. Account from Overseas

I have heard of opening US accounts thorugh online application. I am from a foreign country and have never been to the US. What are the banks that provide online application for accounts with ATM card (with PLUS, CIRRUS)? Is a copy of my passport the only required documentation?

The rules will vary from bank to bank. U.S. banks have certain rules which have to be followed and this includes verifying the identity of their customer and knowing a little about how that account will be used, the transactions that will occur, etc.

What you are asking is possible, but many banks will see the processes they must follow as being too difficult to make this worthwhile. Your best bet is to find a bank with a presence in both the U.S. and your country. Absent that, contact the U.S. banks you want to do business with and ask them what their requirements may be. They will have to be familiar with the types of identification available to you.
