Removing Name From Joint Account

My husband and I have a joint checking/savings account and are in the process of a divorce. Can I remove my name from the accounts? What do I need to do?

Untitled

The surest way to do this is for your husband to draw a check to close out the current account and open a new one with his current bank. Removing one name from a joint account in any other way can be mishandled, and fails to create a clean break from the old account. To close the savings account, either of you can make a full withdrawal, settle with your spouse on a distribution, and each open a separate individual account in the same or a different bank.

All this is assuming that you and your husband are cooperating in obtaining an amicable divorce. If that is not the case, you'll need to contact the current bank and ask for their guidance in getting your name removed. Don't simply open another account for yourself and leave the old ones behind with your name still on them. That can come back to haunt you if there are any future problems with the current accounts.
