I have a lien from a private company for an apartment that I was living in, but left early. If I deposit a check into a brand new checking account will they be able to take it from me?

Laws vary from state to state. In general, however, if a creditor has obtained a judgment against you and you fail to pay it, the creditor may be able to attach or garnish funds in your depositaccount if the creditor can determine which bank holds the account. The creditor normally does not need to know your account number to make the attachment or garnishment effective.
