What may be deposited at an ATM?

Is it possible for an ATM to accept (even by force) any type of paper through the card insertion slot?

ATMs are machines. The card reader slot will accept anything that fits into the slot. Some ATMs have a slot where the card is "sucked in" and some have a "swipe reader" where the card never leaves your hand. In both cases the machine reads the magnetic strip on the ATM card. Both are susceptible to fraud too.

The type where your card is inserted into the ATM may be jammed so your card is held. A "good Samaritan" who is actually a thief may tell you to enter your PIN twice and hit cancel. In fact they're watching for your PIN. After you leave without money or your card, they use a tool to extract your card from the ATM they jammed. Then they'll use your card to withdraw money.

Swipe type ATMs may have a second reader attached that records your magnetic strip information. The thief either shoulder surfs, watching for your PIN, or may hide a miniature camera to actually watch you enter your PIN. With the recorded information and your PIN, they'll encode a blank card and can use this to withdraw money.

If an ATM doesn't look right, don't use it. Contact your bank.

The second possible answer to the question is about deposits at an ATM. Some do accept deposits, but they're the minority because it can be difficult to process these in a timely manner. If the ATM has a slot that opens for a deposit envelope, yes, anything that fits may be inserted, but the deposits are not usually credited to the intended account until they are verified by a bank teller. This way they have the same scrutiny as if they were made face to face.

Technology is providing the capability for the machine to actually scan deposited items now for faster verification. This is costly and is not yet widely used.
