Beware of Contractor Scams
After a storm many homeowners want to rebuild immediately in an attempt to get back to life as usual. Some of these homeowners have cash and some unscrupulous contractors are ready to take it from them. We've seen it time and again in the southern states after a hurricane and now it is happening in Kentucky where there was recent tornado devastation. Victims of the California wildfires should also be aware.
Contractors look for cash over waiting for insurance money, inflate the price of the repairs to get this home on top of the work list and then they take off. Some of the repairs may be started, but usually the work is never complete before the phony contractor is gone with the money.
Even when, or especially when you are in great need, do the homework. Ask for references, talk to the local Homebuilders Association, the Better Business Bureau and your city's Code Enforcement office. Get your agreement in writing and never, never, pay for repairs up front.
