Got a Check, but Sent No Bill

I received a check made out to my company from a vendor that did not owe me the money. What happens if I deposit it?

If you deposit the check, you'll owe the vendor the amount of the check. Your company isn't covered by rules that give consumers protections involving gifts in the mail.

You may need to do business with the careless vendor in the future. You'll make an ally of that vendor if you call and simply ask whether there's an error that caused the vendor to send you the payment.

Best case, you'll find out the mistake's yours, and the money is yours legitimately. Worst case, you'll have assured a vendor your company is one that can be trusted to do the right thing.
