I have a business checking account. Almost four and a half months ago an unexplained $10,000 showed up in the account and every time I check, it is still in the account. I haven't told my bank about it. Is there some kind of statute of limitations or timing when I could claim this money as my own? Your help would be appreciated.
Its hard to imagine that you've "sat on" this information for more than four months. Think about how you would feel if your business made a mistake and credited one of its customer's accounts an extra $1,000 and didn't hear about it for four months.
More importantly, think about how you would feel if you decided to spend this money after a year of silence, only to have the bank discover the error in a routine audit a few months later. Would you be able to repay the bank without a problem? Because that is what the bank would expect when it summarily corrects the error and leaves a negative balance in your business account.
There simply is no statute of limitations on such an error. Contact the bank and let them know about the problem so you can give up dreaming how to spend your little windfall and get back to running your business.
