Vending Machines and Money Service Businesses

Are vending machine operated companies considered a type of money service business?

The definition of "money services business" in the Treasury Department's regulations is generally accepted as a standard. A money services business is in the business of:

  • selling, issuing or redeeming money orders or traveler's checks
  • transferring money on behalf of other persons
  • cashing checks
  • exchanging currency (one country's currency for another's, or different denominations of one country's currency)
  • buying and selling foreign currency
  • issuing, selling or redeeming stored value (for example, prepaid phone cards, gift cards, etc.)
