I want to title my CDaccounts ITF and my credit union says I cannot. Why?
It's possible that your state has passed legislation allowing deposits to be designated as "payable on death" (POD) to one or more designated beneficiaries. That designation, when permitted under a state's laws, normally eliminates the use of "in trust for" designations (sometimes called "Totten trust" accounts).
Check back with the credit union to see if it accepts "POD" accounts. The credit union employee may not have understood your reference to "ITF" if he or she hasn't worked there long enough to have seen that kind of an account. You'll find that "POD" designation, which is totally revocable before a depositor's death (the beneficiary can be changed, too), and which causes ownership of the account to be automatically transferred to the named beneficiary or beneficiaries when the depositor dies, will accomplish the same goals you had for the ITF account.
