Changing Names on a CD

My mother has CDs with my name on them also. How do we go about changing names - putting mine first? Do we have to pay taxes? This was from a life insurance policy.

Whether your name is first or second is inconsequential. A jointly owned CD is a jointly owned CD. You can ask your bank to report interest earned under your SSN if that is what you desire.

If you want a name removed, that is an ownership change. Your bank may require that you close and repoen the account in order to do that. This could involve a penalty for cashing in the CD prior to maturity.
