I am about to be divorced and part of the settlement is that I receive most of the jointCDs. How do I go about removing my spouse's name from them? I do not want to lose the rates as they are better than I can get now.
The only clean way to remove your spouse's name is to close out the CD accounts and reopen them, preferably for the balance of the remaining term and at the rate on the closing account. If your bank won't allow such mid-term changes without penalty (and a new, lower rate), sit out the term of the accounts and get the names straightened out for each account as it matures.
