Are CDbeneficiaries allowed any information on the CDs in which they are named? I learned by accident that I am a beneficiary of a CD. The bank mistakenly sent me a letter about renewing it. I can only assume the CD is from my late grandfather, but I honestly do not know for certain. The bank will not answer any of my questions about it. If I do not know that someone has named me as beneficiary, how am I to know to give the bank the information needed to redeem the CD in the event of their passing?
As a beneficiary you are not an owner of that CD and are not entitled to information about it. There may be a co-owner whose rights supersede yours, and therefore no ownership has passed to you. Beneficiaries can be changed. If the owner has passed and the beneficiary is next in line, this should be handled initially by the estate and the bank.
