POD Same as Joint Account?

Is a certificate of deposit in my name with a POD to my daughter the same as a joint account with her?

No, your daughter's legal access to the funds in the Certificate of Deposit are very different under those two forms of ownership. An account in your name on which your daughter is designated as a Pay on Death beneficiary gives your daughter no access to the funds during your lifetime. The designation of beneficiary is completely revocable, so your daughter has no ownership rights in the account until your death, either. Upon your death, if the account is still open and your daughter is still designated as the Pay on Death beneficiary, the account will become hers and will not be part of your estate.

A joint account with your daughter, however, does give her rights to the account during your lifetime. Her right to the account would be equal to yours, and either of you could close the account or withdraw from it with or without involving the other.
