I am listed as the beneficiary on my friend's CD account. He has died, and the CD will be due in a month. Am I now able to decide whether the CD gets renewed or not?
If the CD was designated as a payable-on-death (POD) account, with you listed as the beneficiary, it became your account when your friend died. You will decide whether it gets renewed or not. When you contact the bank about the account, be ready to provide a certified copy of your friend's death certificate (unless the bank already has a copy), along with your own identification.
