How can I know if there are enough funds in an account before cashing a check. I only have the routing number and account number.
If you can identify the bank on which the check is drawn, you may be able to call the bank and ask if the check is good. The bank will need the account number, the name of the account the check is drawn on, and the dollar amount.
If you have the routing number, you can try doing a Google search on that number. That may lead you to a bank name and location, and a yellow pages search can turn up the telephone number.
Be aware, though, that without the check itself, you may not be able to get information from the bank, and no bank is obligated to respond to an inquiry about a check unless the check is actually presented to the bank for payment. Some banks ask for a check serial number to ensure that a telephone inquiry is legitimate.
