My bank was just bought out by a larger bank and my account number has changed. I have numerous boxes of checks under the old bank name, old routing and account number. Can I continue to use my old checks? I was under the impression that they are good for two years, or do I need to go out and buy new checks under the new bank name, routing and account number?
Be very careful to read the information that the new bank sent you. Usually, if a new account number is assigned, new checks will be needed. However, the new bank may be able to link your old checks to your new account number.
If the bank will let you use your old checks, it will say so in its "Welcome to your new bank" mailing. If you don't see any mention of the old checks, it would be very wise to contact the bank and ask. With all of the other details involved in a bank merger, it's possible they just forgot to include the answer in that mailing.
This might be the perfect opportunity to visit your bank. If there are new faces there, take the time to introduce yourself and ask your question about your checks in person. If the bank wants you to get new checks right away, ask if they will shred your old checks for you. They won't be doing you any good, but a thief could have a great time with them. It won't hurt to ask if the new bank will pay for your first order of checks on your account with them.
