Direct Deposit Confusion

Last Friday my check was direct deposited midday. That night and Saturday, I paid some bills and bought some stuff. The next Monday the bank charged me fourteen overdraft fees for a total of $580. If my check was direct deposited, why would they charge the fees and what can I do to try to get it back. My next check went in and it paid the fees with no problem. My next check is going to pay my rent which is late, so i have no money for the next month. Please help me.

Have you checked to verify that your direct deposit was received in time to be posted on Friday? It's entirely possible that it was not received in time for your bank to post it to give you credit and access to your funds until Monday. If, however, your bank erred and should have given you use of the funds on Friday, you should be entitled to a refund of those fees.

Make a written claim to the bank that your direct deposit was incorrectly credited late, and that you were consequently charged fees that you should not have been assessed. If the bank finds that it erred, it should reverse all those fees. As a preventive measure for the future, verify your available balance before assuming that a direct deposit has posted properly. A telephone call or a check of the bank's online banking system should give you the information you need.
