I used to have a checking account with Citibank in Manhattan for years before I left the US in 2002. I now live in China and wonder if that account is still good. I can't remember if I closed it or not before I left. Now I need to know how I can find out about my account's status from China? If the account is still good, I suppose it still can receive remittance, correct? Since it's been so long, I can't remember my account number and code anymore, but still have blank checks from that bank with me. Which numbers are my account number on the check? Is it the eight digit after the nine digit routing number?
An agency might send me a check from the US, requiring that my receiving bank must also have a nine digit number. However, ABA is only used within the US; no Chinese bank has it. I thought of Paypal, but they don't receive paper checks, so I have to find out if my old account is still valid.
It's been six years since you last transacted any business in the account. The account is probably not still open. Under state law, the bank should have transferred any remaining balance to the Abandoned Property section of the state treasurer's office.
Ironically, you may find it easier to find your funds, if any, at the state's offices than at the bank. Go to the New York State Abandoned Property website for further information. If you find your name on the site, you should read the instructions there for confirming your ownership.
