Closed Checking Account; Can't Open New One

My checking account was closed because of overdrafts. I paid the fees; it's been three years. I can't get a checking account at any bank. Why is this so?

Your bank has a lot longer memory than many. Apparently, it gives its old experience records heavy relevance in account opening decision-making.

In this case, try another bank. If you are turned away, save the disclosure it should give you regarding its use of a Consumer Reporting Agency, probably ChexSystems. That disclosure will have a telephone number you can call to determine whether your former bank ever bothered to report that you had paid off your obligations to it.

If the record doesn't show that pay-off, contact your old bank and ask them to submit an update to reflect the correct information. That should help you get access to a new account at another bank.
