Someone Using My Account to Pay Bills

Someone used my checking account routing number and account number and made payments on personal bills (everything from phone bills to insurance payments). The transaction consisted of drafts and ACH payments. Some of the transactions go back four or five months. I have contacted the bank regarding this fraud and they are researching the claim. I know there is a deadline on when a claim can be held up by the bank. What do I do? All the transactions seemed to be done by three people.

It's likely that the bank will not reimburse you for all of these unauthorized charges to your account because of your delay in notifying them about the transactions. You should contact the police about these payments. They are thefts of your money or the bank's, and if you have already identified the thieves, the threat of arrest may convince them to give you back your money.

You should also ask your bank to close out your account and open a new one. After all, the thieves have information on your old account, and may have shared that information with others. You'll need to work with the bank to take care of any standing payment authorizations, direct charges to your account that you have approved, as well as your debit card and any direct deposits you might have.

Probably most important of all, you must get yourself in the habit of promptly reviewing your account to identify any questionable transactions, and notifying the bank at once whenever one appears. You have to check your monthly statement right away to protect your legal rights. Use your bank's online banking service to check transactions every few days. The sooner you are able to identify fraud, the better for you and the bank.
