My bank was recently aquired by another bank. As part of the buyout they required everyone to be issued new account numbers. How long must they honor my checks with my old account number on them? I have been told both one and two years.

Check the written material that the acquiring bank sent you. Don't go beyond the period of time that's given there.
If that bank has already given you a new account number, the bank will be converting your old checks to post them to the new account. Don't continue using the old checks any longer than absolutely necessary. If you already have checks with the new account number, you'd be wise to shred the unused checks with the old number.
The sooner you move to the new checks the sooner the bank can stop converting your check data. Removing that extra step will remove another place where things could go wrong. The last thing you want is to have one of your checks bounce if the bank can't find the right account number for posting.
