How many days does the paying bank have to notify my local bank if they are going to return a check without payment? Also, is there a time limit on the number of days that my bank has to inform me of a returned check once they are notified by the paying bank?

If the check in question is for $2,500 or more, the paying bank is required to notify your bank if it will return it. The notice must be received by the depositary bank by 4:00 p.m. local time, on the second business day following the banking day on which the check was presented for payment. For example, if the check is presented for payment on Monday, the notice should be received by the depositary bank by Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. Receipt of the returned check satisfies the notice requirement.
There is no notice requirement if the check is for less than $2,500. The only notice your bank gets in such a case is the return of the check itself, but a notice of the return may be substituted if the check itself cannot be returned. Regardless of the amount of the check, your bank should notify you by midnight of the business day next following the day on which it receives the bounced check or the notice that the check is being returned.
