We recently opened a new checking account in the state where we are living, with the intent to close the old one we have had for 12 years from another bank. We had been advised to do so by our bank (WAMU). They say that we need to do this in order to get help from local bank branches for transactions we could not do online. The next day, our new, as well as our old account was frozen. We have no idea why and what could have caused red flags to have gone up at the bank. Neither of us has ever done anything to deserve this. Is this related to the USA PATRIOT Act, and how can we fight it?

Start by contacting your banks for information. If there is a problem with either account, the bank is in the best position to explain what happened to you. We doubt that the USA PATRIOT Act has anything to do with the problem you have described, but frankly don't have enough information to guess what may have caused the problem. Go to the source of the problem and ask the banks what has happened.
