Outstanding Check Prevents Account Closure

My husband and I have a checking account that we would like to close, but there is an outstanding check. The problem is we didn't manage to write down the payee or the amount. It's been three months and no sign of that check. What should we do? Should we stop payment on it? We're willing to pay the company/individual to whom the check was written, if we knew who it was.

Talk to your bank about stopping payment. In most cases, any stop payment will only be valid for six months, but that should be sufficient once the account is completely closed. You will remain liable on the check regardless of whether you've stopped payment on it, but you've agreed that you owe the payee the money, and after the account is closed.
