What Happens if I Spend Money that is Not Mine?

I recently discovered a $5000 deposit to my checking account which I did not make. I noticed that the deposit slip has my account number on it. What would happen to me if I was to spend this money?

If the money doesn't belong in your account, it's reasonable to assume that it belongs in someone else's, and it's likely to be missed. When that happens, the money will get traced, and your bank will remove it from your account. If you've spent the money, you'll owe the bank, and you can be assured it will doggedly pursue reimbursement. That can result in collection efforts, court suits, negative credit information and other geneal unpleasantness.

You know what the right thing to do is. Notify the bank of the error.
