Bank Wants Wife's Endorsement on My Check!

I do not have a bank account. I am married and my wife has an individual checking account at a local bank. I get paid bi-weekly by check and usually I take my check and a deposit slip from her account and deposit it in her account. Today, the teller told me I needed her endorsement on the back of the check made from my employer to me in order to deposit it into my wife's account. This is the first time I ever heard anything like this; the bank has routinely taken my deposits to her account in the past. Does this make sense?

The bank is certainly within its rights to want your wife's endorsement before accepting the check for deposit to her account. Her signature gives the bank a clearer authorization to deduct the check amount from her account in the unlikely event that your payroll check isn't paid.

It's not uncommon for a bank to review its procedures from time to time and make changes that it deems necessary. The fact that the bank was willing to accept the checks for deposit to your wife's account in the past without her endorsement doesn't affect its ability to change its policy regarding such deposits.
