Bank Takes What I Owe and Offset of My Daughter's

I learned that the bank closed my account and I had a direct deposit coming. I owed the bank $186.00 and the deposit was $700.00. I didn't know if the bank would return it or take out what I owed them and let me have the rest. Well, the bank accepted it, but paid off my daughter's account as well. Is that legal?

Without knowing who the owners of the account are, the bank may have acted properly. If you are a joint owner of your daughter's account, the bank may have had a right to offset the good balance in your account against the negative balance in hers. If you think the bank acted incorrectly, contact a customer service representative and ask why your funds were used to pay on your daughter's account.
