Charging a Closed Account? How so?

I want to close my checking account at local bank to keep an unauthorized debit from rehappening. The bank says if an account is closed, the unauthorized debit can still be posted and collected by the business, and I will still be responsible for charges. Is this possible? If an account is closed, how can it be charged?

Your bank should handle things differently. If you close the account, your bank should refuse the debit if it shows up, particularly because you have already put the bank on notice that's the very reason you're closing the account. Even if the bank misses the item and lets it post, you should not be liable for the charge or any fees it generates. You can suggest that your bank brush up on your rights and its responsibilities under Federal Reserve Regulation E.
