Posting Largest Checks First, then Smaller

Is it a law that banks post checks starting with the largest to the smallest? With this practice, the bank causes a lot more overdrafts and return check fees for the customers.

No, it is not a requirement. Banks are free to post checks in any order on a given day. They are encouraged to point out to their customers that posting order can affect overdraft fees when there are not sufficient funds to pay all checks presented in a day's business. Bank regulators have stated that it is a best practice not to manipulate the posting order of checks in order to improve fee income to the detriment of depositors. Posting order is a matter that is currently under congressional scrutiny.
