Check Number Mixup: What to do?

I reordered my checks and thought I had updated the check number (located at the top right and in the MICR line), but I now have checks with the same numbers as my last book of checks (1151-1175). Can I use these new ones even if those check numbers have been used before?

Yes, you can call your bank if you'd like and see if they can be exchanged for correctly numbered checks. The check number is a reference and has no bearing on the payment. What will be important is if you need to find a check that has a duplicate number, that you remember to reference it by both number and date.
