Why are Checks Not Posted Immediately?
Why, when checks clear, are they not posted until midnight? I cannot see what checks cleared until the next day.

 That's because the actual updating of your account is done after all checks, ACH, ATM, other card items and any other transactions affecting your account have been posted. When that is done, an end-of-business process records all the transactions, calculates new balances, creates back-up records, and then makes the data available for online and telephone inquiries. Often, this takes until the wee hours of the morning to complete.
